Application Process
All complete applications are reviewed by program faculty, and decisions are made after the April 1 application deadline.
- All applicants must meet minimum requirements to be considered for admission. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Applications are reviewed and considered for admission based on a combination of academics and experience that best fit with the program’s current open research opportunities.

Students applying to the M.S. in Marine Science program should apply through this application:
- External applicants: Applicants must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Official transcripts must be submitted through the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Grad App, unless otherwise instructed.
- Internal applicants: Internal Âé¶¹´«Ã½applicants must submit unofficial copies at the time of application submission.
Applicants must submit a personal statement describing their academic background, professional interests, and reasons for pursuing graduate study in this program. The statement should highlight relevant experiences, career goals, and how the program aligns with the applicant’s professional aspirations.
A current resume or CV is required and should be uploaded directly to your application portal.
- Two (2) letters of reference are required — requests submitted through the application portal.
- Letters should come from individuals who can speak to your academic and/or professional experience.
- Letters from friends or family members are not acceptable.
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree, in Biology (or other related area) from a U.S. regionally accredited institution, or international equivalent, before matriculation.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (including all coursework taken with no forgiveness for retakes).
- All applicants must meet minimum GPA requirements to be considered for admission.
International applicants or applicants with foreign coursework must also submit:
- A credential evaluation from World Education Service (WES) or ECE, sent directly to Âé¶¹´«Ã½Graduate Admissions, confirming degree and grade equivalency to that of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
- Proof of English language proficiency, if English is not the applicant’s first language.

What Happens After You Apply
- The Office of Graduate Admissions will notify you of receipt of your application and any missing or pending items.
- After reviewing for minimum requirements, applications are reviewed by the program for admissions decisions.
- Admissions decisions are released on a rolling basis after review.
Before Attending — Compliance Requirements
Prior to matriculation, accepted and deposited students will be required to complete the following compliance requirements:
- Submission of all outstanding requirements or conditions, such as final transcripts for degree or coursework verification.
- Completion of physical examination with proof of up-to-date immunization status. Please refer to UNE’s Student Health Services for detailed information.
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and/or drug screen prior to matriculation, as well as periodically throughout the program (as required by clinical affiliations).
- All students must be able to meet the Academic and Technical Standards of the Athletic Training profession.
M.S. in Marine Sciences Admissions FAQ
You will receive an email confirming receipt of your verified application from the Office of Graduate Admissions. All communication from Graduate Admissions will be sent to the email address listed on your Âé¶¹´«Ã½Graduate application. If you wish to check the status of your application please visit your application portal or email the Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment.
There are no quotas for Maine or New England students. Prospective students from all geographic regions are encouraged to apply for admission.
Yes, updates can be made post-submission. Please contact your Graduate Admissions Coordinator to provide updates.
Applicants reapplying to the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Master of Science in Marine Sciences program need to resubmit all application materials for any new cycle in which they apply, including: the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Graduate application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, written statements and responses, fees and payments, and any additional required documentation. Applicants should also actively update their experiences, extracurricular activities, clinical involvement, and volunteering each cycle as well, to reflect the most up-to-date engagement
