UNE’s Kerry Martin receives Marco Gasbarrone Award for contributions to Maine pharmacy practice
鶹ý assistant clinical professor Kerry Martin was recognized with a prestigious award from the Maine Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.
Martin, Pharm.D., RPh, director of experiential education in the School of Pharmacy, received the Marco Gasbarrone Award on Oct. 25 at the Maine Pharmacists Association and Maine Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists Fall Meeting held in Portland.
“This recognition means so much to me,” Martin said. “I’m fortunate to work in a role where I get to see pharmacy practice from so many angles and build relationships with the pharmacists and preceptors making a difference in our communities and profession every day.”
The award recognizes a pharmacist who has made significant, influential, and sustained contributions to pharmacy practice in Maine throughout their career. Recipients are selected as professional role models who demonstrate excellence in contemporary patient care services, contributions to peers and professional groups, community involvement, and advancement of the pharmacy profession in Maine.
“Dr. Martin exemplifies the very best of what it means to be an educator and practitioner,” said Conrad Dhing, Ph.D., senior associate dean of the School of Pharmacy, Maine’s only pharmacy school located on the Portland Campus for Health Sciences. “Her commitment to student success, combined with her passion for teaching and dedication to advancing pharmacy practice throughout Maine, makes her an invaluable asset to our program and the profession.
“This recognition is well-deserved and reflects the profound impact she has on everyone she mentors,” Dhing said.
Martin directs experiential education programs that place pharmacy students in real-world clinical settings throughout Maine. A third-generation pharmacist with more than a decade of community pharmacy experience, she has been involved with 鶹ýsince 2011, when she began serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students and later joined the University full time in 2023.
Under Martin’s leadership, students have participated in innovative community partnerships, including blood pressure clinics at InterMed and drug take-back initiatives with the Portland Police Department.
Prior to transitioning into higher education, Martin served as pharmacy manager for CVS Health, where her commitment to patient care and team leadership earned her the company’s Paragon Award, among the highest honors CVS Health bestows on colleagues.
Martin was also an inaugural recipient of the ACT Community Pharmacy Practice Transformation Educators’ Badge in a cohort of just 54 educators nationwide who demonstrated exceptional commitment to and competencies in community pharmacy practice transformation.
“Nothing compares to watching students come into their own professionally and discover what areas of pharmacy practice excite them,” Martin said.
