Todd Vanderah, Frank Porreca, Edward Bilsky, Denise Giuvelis publish article in Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics

Four faculty and an staff member of the Â鶹´«Ã½College of Osteopathic Medicine and Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences were co-authors on a recent article published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. The title of the article is "Building a Better Analgesic: Multifunctional Compounds that Address Injury-induced Pathology to Enhance Efficacy and Eliminate Unwanted Side Effects."

The studies investigated a novel set of compounds that combine actions of strong opioid analgesics along with a blocker of the peptide substance P, a neuromodulator that promotes pain transmission. The work was conducted in the laboratories of Todd Vanderah, Ph.D., Frank Porreca, Ph.D., and Edward Bilsky, Ph.D., and included data collected by Denise Giuvelis, a graduate of UNE's College of Arts and Sciences and the laboratory manager for Dr. Bilsky's laboratory. The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
