Susan Gray presents research talks at two scholarly conferences

Susan Gray, Ed.D, associate professor and chair in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, co-presented research talks at two scholarly conferences during this past spring semester.  Both were peer-reviewed competitive conferences.

The first was at the Joint Meetings of the American Mathematical Association and the Mathematical Association of America held in Boston, Massachusetts, in January.  This talk, titled, "Factors Related to Using Algebraic Variables to Represent Quantitative Relationships," included an abstract published in the Conference Proceedings.  The focus of this talk was to describe the ways in which college students use and interpret algebraic variables in their mathematical work.

The second was at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in April.  This talk was titled "Overcoming Fundamental Algebraic Difficulties." Its focus was to describe some common difficulties that students encounter when learning algebra and to identify ways to address those difficulties in mathematics instruction.
